Thompson Toyota’s Draw the Future Contest Winners Doylestown, Pennsylvania

Can you believe over 1,000 children entered the Thompson Toyota’s Draw the Future Contest? There were lots of very cool drawings by future artists in kindergarten to sixth grade. And the grand prize winner gets to be featured on a billboard. Sweet. Check out the pix and video.

Philadelphia Trash Strike of 1986

While I was a student at University of the Arts in 1986, the city of Philadelphia endured one of the worst strikes in it’s history. Municipal workers walked off the job July 10, 1986 and came back 20 days later. During a 20 day strike, about 20,000 tons of trash piled up across the city. It made for one smelly mess. I decided to photograph the scene at Veterans Stadium, which was home to the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. I had never seen anything like it. Or as stinky. #tbt #throwbackthursday

Stations of the Cross for Good Friday in Bensalem, Pennsylvania

I had not been back to Our Lady of Fatima since grade school almost 25 years ago. Tonight, I went there to photograph the Stations of the Cross at the church grounds in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The re-enactment is a very well produced presentation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as part of the Easter celebration. Check out some of the images in a slideshow below. Also, be sure to click the full frame option.

The Last Supper Held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Quakertown, Pennsylvania

On Monday evening I photographed the Last Supper. Well, not really. It was a rehearsal for the re-enactment, no…recreation of Michelangelo’s Last Supper that Trinity Lutheran Church has been doing in the church the Thursday before Easter for the last 14 years. It looks really cool.

Firehouse Hostage Standoff in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania

Yesterday, I spent the morning photographing a hostage situation in which 4 firefighters were held captive by a former volunteer member. Luckily, all ended well when the man gave himself up to police.

San Disk Card Plastic Frayed Almost Damages Nikon D800

I was on an assignment last night, went to put one of my SanDisk 16 GB cards into my Nikon D800. The card seemed to stick, I pulled out the card and then pushed it back into the card slot.
The camera then gave me a card error message. I pulled out the card and found that the disk front had pulled away from the plastic. The card is now useless and almost destroyed the Nikon D800 SD card reader on camera.

Luckily, the D800 has a compact flash and SD card slot. So, instead of putting my other Sandisk SD cards into the slot and potentially doing damage to them last night, I placed one of my compact flash cards into the camera to complete the job.
When I finished with the job nd arrived back at the office, I took some old 2GB sd cards and tried one of them in the SD slot. The camera reader worked fine. Thank God!!
I certainly was not looking forward to sending my D800 back to Nikon Professional Services a few days before Easter break. Luckily, I won’t have to do that since it is the card that is at issue.

I’m not sure why the card plastic frayed at the front element, but believe it may have just worn out. That said, I’ll still use SanDisk.

Headed to pick up some new SD Cards.

12 Year Old Taxidermist

On Monday I photographed Mackenzie McCarty, a 12 year old taxidermist. Yes. A 12 year old taxidermist. She started when she was 9. Check out the story in The Intelligencer.

Ash Wednesday Celebration In Doylestown, Pennsylvania

Had a nice time making pictures at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Doylestown, Pennsylvania this past Ash Wednesday. Luckily, Father Paschal Onunwa spoke to me on camera and explained a bit about Ash Wednesday. After 12 years of catholic school, you’d think I’d have remembered some of it. Heres some of the images below and the video.

I Am The “Image Hostage” and “The Hustler”

Screen Shot 2015-02-03 at 9.40.56 AM
I probably tweeted about this a while ago, but now I am finally getting around to posting a link to one of the interviews I did with Elaina Ransford last summer about some of my nightmare business experiences as a photographer. One of the worst, which was a three day shoot in NYC, was mentioned in The Freelancer by Contenly. Contently makes software to empower publishers, creatives and readers.

Speaking of Contently. Check this out, especially if you’re a freelancer. It’s a quiz for the freelance. Well, it’s actually geared towards a writer, but it may help you figure out which kind of freelancer you are if you don’t already know.
I’m “The Hustler.”

Here’s another article I was quoted in a while back from the New York Times about wedding photography.

Preparation Makes High Angle On A Mansion In Buckingham, Pennsylvania Easy

CA8_5825 2

Scene when I arrived with the 10 foot gate obstructing my view.

The lesson here is…be prepared.

Over the weekend I had to make some pictures of various properties in the New Hope, Pennsylvania and Buckingham, Pennsylvania areas. Most were pretty easy to photograph. The one where I had to become a bit inventive was Clairemont Mansion with a 10 foot gate that obstructed the view.

The image I needed to make was to show the landscape as well as the building. It was not going to work with the gate in the foreground. And I didn’t want to shoot through the gate because it would block a clean view. I thought, “Oh No! I may need a drone!” Then quickly realized that that isn’t necessary because I was prepared.

So, I went back to my car and pulled my Bogen Monopod  out. I then placed the Nikon D800 on the top, set the shutter speed for a 5 second delay. Then I set the exposure, tripped the shutter and hoisted the monopod and camera over my head as high as I could possibly get it into the air.

Risoldi Properties

The image I was able to make by having my monopod handy, and in my trunk.

If I hadn’t been prepared and carried my monopod in the trunk, I wouldn’t have been able to make the picture I needed to illustrate the assignment. Preparation is a key ingredient in the photojournalism field.

Now I have to go and finish my interview with The Art Career Project. They’ve asked to interview me about getting started as a photojournalist.

Holy Ghost Prep vs New Hope Solebury Boys Basketball in New Hope, Pennsylvania

I the past few weeks, I’ve photographed some ball games in tiny gymnasiums. Friday night was no different. I photographed a boys basketball game in New Hope, Pennsylvania for the Intelligencer and Courier Times. With the threat of snow, the start time for the game was pushed up by one and a half hours. Even so, the small New Hope Solebury High School Gymnasium was still packed. The floor is so tight to the walls that there is literally about a foot and a half between the two. Since there wasn’t much space, I decide to sit in the right corner on the side which Holy Ghost Prep would shoot first. It payed off as, except for the first three minutes, they dominated the game. I love when I shoot a game and there is plenty of action. Sitting in the corner I used my Nikon D800 with a 180mm and Nikon D700 with an 85mm 1.8.

At 6400 ISO, I was able to shoot with a shutter speed of 500 and an aperture of f2.8.
So, for the most part, I was able to freeze the action.

For video, I shot at 3200 ISO with 30 frames per second at f8.

It was a good night. 🙂

Shooting Backgrounds for Game On

Central Bucks West at Quakertown Basketball
I photographed what will be used as a background scene setter for the internet sports talks show Game On. It was a pretty simple shoot. Go to Council Rock South gymnasium and find a high vantage point, then make wide shots of the stadium filled with activity. In this case, it was wrestling. Used a 17mm and a 20mm with my Nikon D800 which has been replaced by the Nikon D810.  It didn’t take long to accomplish the task. I’ve attached one of my instagram images as well as a few wide shots. Council Rock South Gymnasium Council Rock South Gymnasium

Wowed by Quakertown Gymnasium or Central Bucks West at Quakertown Basketball Game

Central Bucks West at Quakertown BasketballPhotographed a high school basketball game in one of the most spacious gymnasiums I have ever seen. What a major league nice place Quakertown High School’s gym is since they replaced the old gymnasium. There was plenty of room to setup and maneuver around to make the images I needed to show the basketball action. These images were made with the Nikon D700 using an 85mm 1.8 lens. Only downside is that parking currently is not good. Since construction is still going on at the school, the parking lot is useless for a basketball game. One has to park on the street. 🙁
Anyway, here are some images from the game and a somewhat overall from the gymnasium itself.
