Video Still On Page One

Well, I finally did it. A1 of todays newspaper featured one of my images. That’s happened before, many times over, but never from a video that I had photographed. One of the problems with shooting video and stills is that eventually, you come upon a situation where you’ll have to decide on video or stills. Inevitably, you’ll be shooting video and a moment pops that makes great video as well as stills. Last night I was shooting video as well as stills as patrons at the Iron Abbey in Horsham, Pennsylvania watched the USA vs. Ghana World Cup soccer (or football if you feel that way) match. One minute into the match the USA teams scored. The crowd in the bar went wild. At the time, I was shooting video. I’m thinking, this is some great video. I’ll get some stills next time something interesting happens. And…..nothing. For a while. As the clock ticks, I worry about meeting my deadline since I still had another assignment and video to edit from earlier in the day. After about 45 minutes waiting for something to happen, I though that I’d better go edit the pix and get them in. In essence, I gave up due to deadline restrictions. Previously, I had a conversation with one of the editors about the necessity of doing video first and if I had to I could pull a frame from the video and use it as a still image. If you shoot fast enough, it is possible to do. Once that thought entered my head, I had a plan. Pull the best moment from video and use that as a still image to go along with the other still images from the event. Those were mostly of people waiting with baited breath for another goal that the USA team scored about 80 minutes into the game.

Upon editing the stills, I whittle them down to the best 3 images, but am lacking that “moment” when the USA team scored. I needed one more with jubilation. I open up Adobe Premiere Pro and load the raw video into the program. While looking at the video, I see the sequence where fans went crazy after a goal. I think, “That’s what I need!!”

Now how do I pull it? Google search: http://www.adobepress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1661113&seqNum=4 Yeah!! Now I know how to do it. Thanks Adobe Press! Export the video. Place the image into the folder with the other edits. Then caption in Photo Mechanic. Now opened in Adobe Photoshop… and praying that it will look good. It was shot at 3200 ISO so I was worrying about grain. It actually looked OK. Tweaked it a bit in Photoshop. Had to resize it a bit, but all in all, I was happy with the result. I’d do it again if I had to. Did it work? Yes. Is it acceptable? Yes. Am I looking forward to pulling a still from a video again? No. A still image is a still image, a video is a video.

Here’s the final image and video.

Can you spot the still?

Archdiocese of Philadelphia Church Closing

BRISTOL, PA - MAY 31: Ralph DiGuiseppe of Bristol, Pennsylvania is hugged by Sister Mary Donald, O. SS. T after the closing of St. Ann's parish is announced May 31, 2014 in Bristol, Pennsylvania. (Photo by William Thomas Cain/Cain Images) (William Thomas Cain)

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia had been discussing the merger of several parishes in the Philadelphia area over the last few months. The announcement was to be made last Saturday night to parish members of the affected churches.

On Saturday night I was assigned to photograph what potentially might have been one of the last masses celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bristol, Pennsylvania.
I arrived early, to make sure I had time to speak with the church pastor and secure permission to snake pictures during the service as well as the announcement of the merger.
The padre agreed, although I did receive a bit of resistance from some parishioners that has said they didn’t believe the pastor would like anyone making photographs. They seemed surpassed when i told them I had secured permission, and all was good.

It seemed as though people knew what was coming when Father Tom Morris read the announcement from the Archdiocese. There were plenty of tears beforehand as well as during. It was a difficult assignment to photograph, because I could feel their pain. Below are some of the images as well as the video I made during the announcement from Father Morris.

Georgian Court University Graduate Student 2014 Commencement

Last week I photographed Georgian Court University’s grad student commencement ceremony. As always, it was crazy but fun. Luckily, the rain held off so the students could march past the fountain and eagle sculpture during their processional. I met a nice couple who had met at the college during their grad student studies and just married two weeks before graduation. They hadn’t even gone on their honeymoon yet. Souderton High School Bomb Threat

Yesterday I was sent to cover a bomb threat at Souderton High School. The assignment was vague, school evacuated….find out why and illustrate it.

I arrive at the school, and find that the entrance is blocked. The police officer on scene says, “Go to the school district offices,” but wouldn’t tell me why the school was evacuated. I think that’s not going to work for me. So, I drive around to another entrance. There I see a line of cars trying to get to and from the school. Students are walking away, looking somewhat distraught. I get out of the car with a 300mm. Start making pictures of three girls walking from the school. The one girl flips me off.

flip

I ask them what was going on and explain I was there for a newspaper. They tell me about the bomb threat and that the reason the other girl flipped me off was that she couldn’t get back to her car and they were stranded outside the school. Apparently, her keys were in her backpack at the school. No car keys. No ride.

I realize I can’t get through the traffic. Then decide to find another way in. Along a side road there was another entrance to the football field. I park and walk across the field. Made some images and video of students in the stadium waiting to go home. The stadium was the safest and farthest place away from the school building for students to congregate. As I walked closer to the building, a police officer and the school principle stopped and asked if I had permission to be on school property. I explained why I was there and that I wasn’t sure if I had permission. I was told by the officer and principal that I do not have permission and had to leave. I recall thinking, “If you know I don’t have permission, then why are you asking.” I said no problem, and started to exit. As I was walking away, I was thinking that since every time they have an event at the school the and send a press release aren’t they “inviting” us onto school property? Isn’t that permission? It didn’t matter though, I had what I needed as far as imagery, and didn’t want to run into a hassle with the police.

Masked Protest

Just got back from shooting a drone protest. I brought along my old Nikon D1 and after I finishing with the assignment, I picked up the D1 to play around by making some B&W images.

Ring Flash Pocket Wizards

My old friend Jon was selling a bunch of Pocket Wizards. Went over today and
picked up all of them. Then proceeded to play with them the rest of the day.
For those who don’t know what Pocket Wizards do, they are remote triggers
for flash or cameras which enable the photographer to not be tethered to a cable.
I most always trip over my own stinking cable, so this is a great thing. No more
tripping and knocking things over.

Cooper Goes to the Veterinarian BW17D1 03272014

Day 3:
On Thursday morning our dog Cooper, the cocker spaniel, came into the house after his morning walk with a bloody paw. My wife examined the paw and saw that he had badly broken a nail. We’re not sure how this happened, but he most likely got it stuck on the fence as he chased a squirrel in the yard this am. We bandaged him and took him to the veterinarian. The vet clipped the broken nail and cleaned the wound. Then sent him on his way with some meds (the size of horse pills) which he has to take for 10 days. He’s fine, but a little sore.

Spring Equinox

Went to photograph a spring equinox presentation at Pebble Hill Church. While driving, I recalled my last experience making pictures at this church. I had a very negative experience that time, and was wary of going there again. It was 1989 and I was on assignment for the Philadelphia Inquirer. We were doing a feature on the church during a musical performance. I was able to make pictures of the performer without incident, but every time I raised my camera to my eye to photograph the audience, I met with resistance. After a few times of this, I was asked not to photograph the audience because the camera may take away their essence. WHAT!? Are you kidding me? No, they were serious. I left.

This time was a bit different. Everyone was very welcoming and it was a much more pleasant experience.
Only thing I couldn’t figure out was, if the woman giving the performance was a psychic, why didn’t she know I was coming?
